THE CAL - CONSTELLATION

A transportation container designed to safely house and move the CAL quantum supercomputer for Constellation.

The design was grounded in real quantum-computing hardware and engineering, translating that technical language into a believable piece of equipment for the show. Because the container was built specifically around the CAL system, it also needed to be physically accurate to the actual quantum computer, respecting the dimensions and position of the internal components, including the chip and its surrounding hardware.

The visual language drew from NASA and aerospace engineering aesthetics: functional structures, protective systems, access points and materials designed around a clear technical purpose rather than decoration.

Part of the development also involved exploring animations and mechanical sequences to understand how the container could open, deploy and provide access to the quantum computer inside.

The main challenge was to make speculative technology feel engineered, functional and believable—something that could exist in the real world rather than simply looking like science fiction.
